« Step out of  our comfort zone

Going away from our family, friends and acquaintances always represent a hurtful decision surrounded by minor and big consequences in the near and far future. Regardless of it, life always gives us choices and it is up to us to determine whether we will take them or not. For us, one of the most important, if not the most to decide to take such an option, is to develop ourselves on a professional and personal level so we can contribute to society and the world progress.

Erasmus Mundus as an opportunity

In our opinion the EMIMEO Erasmus program englobes these two opportunities, the first would be to say that the European program inherits the humanist spirit of Erasmus by giving to some people around the world some certainty in the most uncertain of times, giving a space for the exchange of experiences and anecdotes. Offering more perspective of what it means to be a human in our contemporary never resting society and making us more human in the way.

On the professional level, despite we have faced complicated times alongside, our professors, technical and administrative supervisors have shown their support without fail despite them being under the same or even more pressure. Through this, almost two years we have developed intellectual, technical, and soft skills that have helped us embrace in a more definite way our possible future in a never-ending research field as it is electronics/optics.

We are not saying it will be effortless, there are some cultural shocks with the people we’ve met and it was challenging ourselves. Despite this, all these things come alongside the good things, making friends that will eventually become part of you, and you part of them, sharing experiences, travelling together, etc. Facing every obstacle together increased our personal and professional traits.

Studying at the University of the Basque Country (Spain)

The University of the Basque Country UPV-EHU was our third-semester choice. The subjects are more oriented toward the instrumentation of electronics and radio frequency (RF), which highly attract us because of the high prestige that telecommunications technology is gaining in our daily lives.

At the end of this semester, we can analyze and design RF circuits while building strong skills by using software tools (Matlab, LabVIEW) and RF measurement techniques (Spectrum analyzer, vector network analyzer…) on one hand, and gain some knowledge in digital systems and control design using current programmable logic technology (FPGA devices) on the other hand.

Bilbao is one of the main cities in the Basque Country, which makes it a unique city located in an even more special territory inside Europe for having a non-Indo-European language, the fact that enriches its culture and history.

As for an ERASMUS student, besides having classes in Leioa during the day, you can always have an amazing social life in Bilbao, which is around 20 minutes away by bus.

Despite the Covid-19 restrictions, we were able to meet other ERASMUS students, having face to face classes, go for a hike on the weekends, or visit the beaches whenever we wish during the year since Bilbao is surrounded by mountains and is very close to the coast.

Finally, pursuing an EMIMEO master’s degree is one of the most valuable gifts you can give yourself, so we would like to advise you to treat it as an investment: expect to gain as much as you are willing to offer. »
